For counselors who completed their master’s degree before 2010, D’Youville offers convenient online clinical courses designed to help you meet the state’s diagnostic privilege requirements and advance your professional practice.
In June 2024, licensed mental health counselors and other mental health counselors who had completed a 60-credit master’s degree program were granted diagnostic privileges in New York. This long-sought extension to the LMHC scope of practice will help counselors provide diagnoses for clients that can lead to much-needed referrals and treatment.
If you earned a 48-credit master’s degree, you may not meet the New York State Education Department (NYSED) diagnostic privilege requirements. With D’Youville, you can complete the additional credits you need in a flexible online format.
This program also features a low, flat-rate tuition cost. D’Youville’s goal is to support the counseling profession with flexible, affordable continuing education that can help LMHCs prepare to do even more for clients.
This program features fully asynchronous online coursework—that means there are no set class times, so you can study when it works for you. The program is designed to fit your schedule and help you meet the educational requirements to qualify for the NYSED LMHC-D credential.
The online Diagnostic Privileges program is available to practicing LMHCs with a 48-credit master’s degree obtained from an accredited institution prior to 2010. Each course runs for eight weeks and has been approved by NYSED to meet the clinical course requirements for diagnostic privilege.
Students who wish to enroll in D’Youville’s online Diagnostic Privileges program must submit the following:
• Proof of a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
• Official transcripts from all colleges/universities currently or previously attended.
• Proof of an active, unrestricted clinical mental health counseling license in New York State.
As part of D’Youville’s dedication to the counseling profession, we are offering LMHC-D coursework at an affordable, one-time flat-rate cost to help as many professionals qualify for diagnostic privileges as possible.
