Better access to mental health services is a pressing need in communities across North America. RNs with doctoral-level training in psychiatric primary care can play a vital role in helping people receive support for depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many other mental health issues.
If you have at least two years of experience in mental health nursing and are a working registered nurse (RN) with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and an advanced practice certification, you can prepare to make a difference as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) with D’Youville University.
In as few as two years, our Doctor of Nursing Practice – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program (DNP-PMHNP) can equip you to provide primary mental health services to patients across the lifespan and take on leadership roles in care coordination, research, administration, and education.

Who This Program Is For
The online DNP-PMHNP is a 30-credit doctoral program. This program is for working nurses who have earned a master’s degree in nursing and who hold an advanced practice certification in any specialty area.
When applying to the program, your MSN and professional experience will be evaluated to determine if you need additional coursework or clinical experience beyond what is described in the curriculum. If we do find gaps, you may take longer to complete your DNP.
This program meets licensure requirements in the state of New York and in Ontario.
COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS
This program is for working nurses who have earned a master’s degree in nursing and who hold an advanced practice certification in any specialty area.
Note: If your Master’s PMHNP did not have 540 clinical hours, you will need to take 1-2 Practicum Immersion courses to meet the total requirement of 1000 clinical hours
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
We require that applicants hold a master’s degree and an APRN specialty certification. We also require at least two years of practice as a registered nurse in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
To apply, prospective students must provide:
- Completion of a master’s degree with specialty preparation as psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program at a college or university (or CNO in Ontario).
- Minimum graduate grade point average of 3.25 (based on a 4.0 system).
- Official transcripts from each college or university attended; this must include all undergraduate and graduate work.
- Copy of an active, unencumbered license as a professional registered nurse and advanced practice certification in New York state or Ontario.
- Current CPR certification with a psychomotor component.

Course must be completed in-person and equivalent to American or Canadian Red Cross Certification

- Copy of current national certification (or exam-eligibility) as an advanced practice nursing in a specialty area (where applicable).
- Documentation of the number of clinical hours completed in prior master’s degree program.

Canadian students: D’Youville is proud to welcome Canadian applicants to our online programs. Our program is 100% online and therefore does not require any visa to attend.
NOTE: Any applicant may choose to submit GRE scores if they believe their application does not reflect their potential to succeed in a doctoral program.
If an applicant meets all admission criteria and is attending or has previously attended a doctoral program, he or she must submit a letter from that school of nursing stating the applicant is in good standing and can register for classes.
