You’ll also complete clinical experience with different patient populations in a variety of settings. Graduates of this program will be prepared to pursue board certification as a family nurse practitioner – for example, to earn the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification (FNP-BC™) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

This program meets licensure requirements in the state of New York. Applicants from outside of New York (including Ohio and Pennsylvania) are responsible to contact their Board of Nursing to verify that this program meets the requirements for future nurse practitioner licensure.

YOU WILL:

  • Gain knowledge and skills to provide care services across populations, from birth to the elder years.
  • Assess, diagnose, and prescribe treatments for individuals and families, within appropriate legal and ethical parameters.
  • Learn to provide advising and education to patients about a range of topics, including healthy lifestyle choices, chronic condition management, and more.
  • Prepare for board certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

D’Youville’s online FNP Advanced Certificate program includes 750 hours of precepted clinical practice. You’ll have the opportunity to gain some of these hours at the organization where you currently work, making this program even more convenient for busy nurses like you.

COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS

FNP certificate students who have earned a clinical MSN will be required to complete 11 courses while students with a nonclinical MSN will be required to complete one or two additional courses.*

Applicants for the online FNP Advanced Certificate program who meet all published admission criteria will be invited to discuss additional program requirements including on-campus immersion experiences and clinical placements prior to receiving final acceptance decisions.

*We will conduct an individual gap analysis of each applicant’s transcripts to determine what additional courses or clinical hours may be needed to satisfy FNP certificate requirements. Note: courses included in the gap analysis form cannot be older than 5 years.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the general admission requirements for graduate programs at D’Youville University, applicants to the post-master’s certificate in family nurse practitioner must present the following:

  • Completed Master of Science degree in nursing from a CCNE- or NLNAC- (ACEN)accredited program at a college or university in the U.S. (or by the CNO in Ontario).
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)/ current resume documenting at least one year of practice as a registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree.
  • Official transcripts from all college/ universities attended.*
  • College transcripts must show completion of a 3-credit descriptive statistics course or equivalent with a grade of C or better.
  • An overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0. Applicants whose overall G.P.A. was between 2.70–2.99 will be considered based on their professional experience and CV. Preferential admissions will be given to applicants with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
  • Active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in the state or province in which the student resides.
  • A current CPR certification with a psychomotor component.
    • Course must be completed in-person and equivalent to America or Canadian Red Cross Certification
  • Applicants who work full-time are not eligible to complete the Family Nurse Practitioner certificate on the planned two-year completion timeline.
  • Canadian Students: D’Youville is proud to welcome Canadian applicants to our online programs. For your convenience, we have arranged for our in-person immersion experiences to take place in Ontario and not at our D’Youville campus in Buffalo, NY.

*Non-U.S. students must submit a “course-by-course” evaluation (or equivalent) of all college and/or university transcripts through the World Education Services (WES) or other approved foreign transcript evaluation agencies.

**A student who meets the entry requirements and is currently or previously enrolled in a nurse practitioner program at another college or university must obtain a letter from their current school of nursing stating the student is in good standing, not on probation, and able to register for classes. Students who were dismissed for any reason from a graduate nursing program will not be considered for admission.
